The “Caribbean Paleo” Media Tour: Althea Brown’s Best Tips for Book Publicity

June 30, 2024 by LeAnna Smith

In the latest episode of Creatively Speaking: Beyond the Binding, Althea Brown, the celebrated author behind the amazing Caribbean Paleo, shares all of her best tips for book publicity! In this episode, Althea recounts her evolution from food blogger to published author. Her story is a vibrant tapestry of gluten-free adaptations of Guyanese, Guyanese-American, and Caribbean cuisine, all while nurturing a connection to her heritage for her American-born children. Let’s dive in!

As our conversation kicks off, Althea shares a little about her background and how she found herself adopting a gluten-free diet. As she describes her personal health revelations, including her triumph over gluten sensitivity, Althea emphasizes the ways in which these changes sent ripples through her community. Tweaking her favorite recipes wasn’t merely for the sake of her own well-being; they were about cultural preservation through food. Althea’s transition to a gluten-free lifestyle resonated with many, landing her a spotlight as a featured chef during Antigua and Barbuda’s Restaurant Week. This recognition highlighted the broader impact of her dietary choices, which went beyond personal health to touch the lives of many in her community.

As our discussion continues, Althea shares the meticulous process of bringing Caribbean Paleo to life. From the rapid pace of traditional publishing to the refined craft of blogging, her story reflects the relentless dedication required to navigate the publishing world. The challenges and triumphs of her journey helped Althea curate all of her best tips for book publicity, including successful book launches and personal connections made at heartwarming book signings. Through the highs and lows, Althea’s tale is a testament to the power of sticking to one’s vision and the importance of professional presentation, whether throughout the process of publishing or during a self-funded book tour.

“All of the big launches were self-funded, but I charged an entry price for those because there would be a tasting and a book, and really the tasting and the book… was just to offset the cost of renting a space and buying the food… So I made zero dollars, but I was happy just getting the book out there and then just connecting with this large community that has supported me.”

Throughout our conversation, Althea’s commitment to community-building shone brightly. From the overwhelming support at book signings to her presence across social media platforms, she’s a beacon for many seeking to marry traditional flavors with modern dietary needs. Her best tips for book publicity include curating a robust social media presence and cultivating a community through shared food experiences. Her philosophy isn’t just inspiring, it’s a call to action for anyone looking to infuse authenticity into their culinary endeavors.

Her future shines with opportunities, including a featured chef role during Antigua and Barbuda’s Restaurant Week, as she transitions from blogging to creating tangible, flavor-filled experiences. Althea, a beacon in the social media expanse, delves into the strategies that have helped her connect with fans across various platforms and the importance of authenticity in every post.
